Dear Friends and Neighbors,
On Tuesday, our leaders in the House Appropriations Committee held a press conference to unveil the 2021-23 House Republican operating budget proposal. It's a plan Reps. Drew Stokesbary, Drew MacEwen, Kelly Chambers and Chris Corry have been working on since last summer when we hoped Gov. Jay Inslee would call us into a special session. Of course, the governor chose not to do that and unveiled his own budget plan in December.
Contrary to the governor's proposal, which spends too much, saves too little and raises taxes, the House Republican plan takes the opposite approach. I'll let our budget lead, Rep. Drew Stokesbary, explain in his own words.
With this budget, we are proving we can fund all of our state's needs and priorities without raising taxes or cutting services. We can fund the working families tax credit for the first time in its 12-year history, provide sales tax exemptions for basic necessities, help low-income families defray the cost of remote learning, safely reopen our schools, take bold steps to solve the homelessness crisis, provide B&O tax relief for our small businesses, and more.
During Tuesday's press conference, a reporter asked if our plan was simply being rolled out as an exercise in contrast. I can guarantee you the members who spent days, weeks and months working on it didn't do it for the optics. They did it because they know there's a better path forward for our state. They believe you deserve fresher ideas and better outcomes from your state government. They're right, and I'm incredibly pleased with the plan they've put forward.
